Cancer may be ‘third wave’ of WTC illnesses

Some exposed to toxic dust developing rare blood-cell disease, expert says

May 31, 2007

NEW YORK - The head of the largest program tracking the health of World Trade Center site workers said several have developed rare blood cell cancers, raising fears that cancer will become a “third wave” of illnesses among those exposed to toxic dust after Sept. 11.

Dr. Robin Herbert, co-director of the World Trade Center Medical Monitoring Program at Mount Sinai Medical Center, said researchers who have screened 20,000 of the estimated 40,000 ground zero workers are “most concerned” about lymphatic & blood cancer cases.

We’re worried about a third wave, which is the possibility of cancer down the road,” Herbert said in an audiotaped interview posted on the New England Journal of Medicine’s Web site.

The kind of thing that worries us is that we know we have a handful of cases of multiple myeloma in very young individuals & multiple myeloma is a condition that ... almost always presents later in life,” she added. “That’s the kind of odd, unusual & troubling finding that we’re seeing already.”

The city’s health commissioner said Thursday there was no evidence of a link to cancers & trade center dust exposure.

While we're concerned about the possibility” of cancer cases in people exposed to trade center dust, cancer cases haven’t increased, Commissioner Thomas Frieden said. State data show no changes in leukemia & myeloma cases in New York City as of 2004, the latest data available, he said.

Mount Sinai published research last year that said about 70% of the workers they screened had developed various respiratory illnesses.

More than 100 have cancer
An article published Thursday with Herbert’s interview in the New England Journal of Medicine said that while workers did inhale cancer-causing chemicals, “an associated increased risk for respiratory tract cancer & most other types of cancer will not be apparent for decades.”

The researchers from Johns Hopkins University & the University of Rochester suggested tracking diseases for at least 2 decades thru a New York City-based health registry that plans to monitor residents’ & workers’ health for 20 years.

Herbert, who wasn't available for further comment Thursday, didn’t say in her audiotaped interview how many blood cell cancer cases the Mount Sinai program was tracking. She said researchers are verifying all the cases that have been reported by members of the monitoring program.

An attorney representing thousands of workers & residents said that more than 100 of his clients have blood cell cancers. About 8 have multiple myeloma, David Worby said. Most of his clients are in their 30's or 40's & the youngest is 29, he said.

More than 1/2 of all cases of multiple myeloma, a plasma cell cancer that spreads throughout bone marrow, occur in people over 70 & about 1% of cases occur in people under 40, according to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation in Norwalk, Conn.

Herbert, referring to cancer as a possible third wave of disease, said the first was the chronic coughing & acute respiratory problems that workers got right after their post-Sept. 11 work.

Second, she said, are more serious chronic lung diseases such as sarcoidosis, which killed a New York woman who inhaled dust from the collapsing twin towers on Sept. 11, 2001. The city medical examiner last week added Felicia Dunn-Jones’ 2002 death to the official list of Sept. 11 attack victims.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said of Herbert’s remarks on blood cell cancers: “The city’s own doctors don’t - they will not say there’s no possibility - but they don’t at the moment see this as the great threat.”

Said Worby: “It’s not a great threat to the general public, but to people who are already sick & have these blood cell cancers & who gave up their lives ... it’s a great threat to them because a lot of them are going to die.”

Melanoma: The Warning Signs
by Dr. Mai Brooks

Melanoma, the deadly skin cancer, is on the rise. In the United States in 2008, there were estimated 62,480 new cases. In the same year, 8,420 people were predicted to die from this cancer. Melanoma is the #6 most common malignancy in men and #7 most common in women. The ethnicity of melanoma is quite interesting, with 98.2% of cases in white patients, 1.1% in Hispanics, and 0.7% in African Americans.

So, how do you tell if a spot on your skin is a melanoma? There is no sure method. A lot of times, even doctors cannot tell a benign mole from a malignant melanoma, especially when it is still early and small. That is why dermatologists do so many shave biopsies in the office. The piece of skin is then specially stained and looked at under the microscope by pathologists to look for melanoma cells – then and only then can anyone be sure.

However, there are some helpful common sense guidelines. First, you should pay attention to your skin. Any new mole is more suspicious than one that has been around without change for years. Any mole that is very dark or grows quickly in size and thickness should sound off alarm bells. The experts do offer some helpful warning signs to look for – summarized as ABCD as follows: (A) asymmetry, (B) border irregularity, (C) color variation, and (D) diameter greater than 6mm. In men, melanoma occurs most commonly on the trunk, followed by arms, and head and neck areas. In women, it is found most commonly on the legs, followed by arms and then the trunk.

Some people are at particular high risk for developing melanoma. These patients should see a dermatologist at least once a year. High risk factors include family history of melanoma, previous skin cancer, childhood radiation, and dysplastic nevus syndrome. There is now a genetic blood test for a hereditary type of melanoma. You may consider this test for yourself or your family member if: a) you have had 3 separate melanomas, b) 3 or more members of your family have had melanoma, or c) 3 or more members of your family have had melanoma or pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately, because there is no drug proven to prevent melanoma, high risk essentially just means more vigilance and more care to avoid direct sun exposure.

DDW: To Prevent Colorectal Cancer, a Vegetarian Diet From Day One

By Jeff Minerd, Contributing Writer, MedPage Today
Reviewed by
Zalman S. Agus, MD; Emeritus Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
May 21, 2007
WASHINGTON, May 21 -- A vegetarian diet from birth is protective against colorectal cancer, according to a study of lifelong vegetarians in India.

Lifelong vegetarianism, practiced by most Hindus in India, was associated with a 30% risk reduction for colorectal cancer compared with non-vegetarian Indians, reported Yogesh M. Shastri, M.D., of the J.W. Goethe University Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany, at Digestive Disease Week sessions here.

Previous large, well-designed studies, including the NIH-sponsored Women's Health Initiative, failed to show that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables protected against colorectal cancer, Dr. Shastri said. However, these studies included mostly western, middle-aged patients who had adopted vegetarianism later in life.

The current study prospectively analyzed a cohort of about 10,000 Indians seen at a cancer hospital for various types of carcinomas during 2000 to 2005. All patients underwent a nutritional evaluation. There were 2,092 vegetarians.

Hindu vegetarians in India strictly avoid meat, fish, and eggs, although they do consume milk and milk products, Dr. Shastri said.

The researchers estimated the association between vegetarianism and colorectal cancer by case-control analysis. The case group was nearly 800 patients with colorectal cancer. The control group included nearly 2,000 patients with tobacco-related cancers and more than 7,000 patients with other types of cancers.

Multivariate analysis by logistic regression found an inverse association between colorectal cancer and vegetarianism (odds ratio=0.71; 95% confidence interval=0.59 to 0.85).

"This study proves that lifelong vegetarianism prevents colorectal cancer," Dr. Shastri said.

The reason that adopting vegetarianism later in life may not protect against colorectal cancer is that the genetic changes that set the malignant process in motion most likely occur during the first or second decade of life, Dr. Shastri said.

Usually, these changes begin with a deletion of the tumor-suppressing APC gene in colon cells. In the absence of this gene, an adenoma can develop by the fourth or fifth decade and proceed to carcinoma a decade or two later, he said.

Switching to a vegetarian diet or one high in fruits and vegetables may have other health benefits, but doing so by ages 30 or 40 or even as teenagers "is perhaps too late to prevent colorectal cancer," Dr. Shastri said. "There is no shortcut. It has to be from birth."

However, in families with a history of colorectal cancer, having children on a vegetarian diet including milk from birth "could be of great help" in reducing colorectal cancer risk, he added.

The health risks of this approach include deficiencies in protein and vitamin B-12. However, soy products are a good alternative source of protein, and B-12 supplements can be used if necessary. Milk is also a good source of both protein and B-12. "Milk is a complete food except for iron and vitamin C," he said.

Further research should be done to determine which aspects of the Indian vegetarian diet are responsible for the beneficial effect, Dr. Shastri said. Two promising candidates are garlic and the Indian spice curcumin, both of which have been shown to have a chemoprotective effect, he said.

Cancer – The Most Dreaded Disease is Curable
by Sonny Julius

Are you shocked? Are you a disbeliever? Do you believe Big Pharma and the medical community that says there is no known cure for cancer now? Do you believe the “pink campaign” for supporting research is legitimate?

Come on folks. Don’t be stupid. Don’t let all those organizations brainwashing into thinking there is no cure for cancer.

First of all, there is a cure for cancer and before I finish this article I’ll prove it with documented proof.

As a matter of fact, there is no such thing as an incurable disease. That’s what Kol Sellers says who is a lifelong student and practitioner of the natural healing arts, Master herbalist, Message Therapist, Reflexologist and more.

Here is some of what he says. A cancer cure is going to be a lot more involved than a certain supplement that happens to alkalize the blood and inhibit cancer growth or kill cancer cells. Cancer is diagnosable as cancer only because it got out of hand.

This out of hand situation can definitely be helped by killing the cancer cells, but unless you are using chemotherapy, the kill cancer approach is probably not, by itself, going to work.

Instead a planned holistic approach to cancer must be selected and followed. It will need several steps and, no matter how good it is, it will probably require help outside of that plan for each individual to become totally healed.

There is a long list of substance shown to kill or inhibit cancer or make conditions unsuitable for it to continue. The list of cancer killers is not so much useful for curing cancer as they are for inhibiting it, turning the tide against it and making it possible for natural cancer cure (the immune system) to get control of the situation.

Here is the best comment I heard Kil Sellers make and it could solve the cancer disease real soon. This is what he said, “I am willing to bet half my kingdom that if cancer was stricken from all media, and no one heard about it for several years, that cancer rates would be cut in half or would get even lower than that.

To further my discussion about cancer cures, I have to tell you about, Bill Henderson, who I know personally and have talked to him on numerous occasions.

Bill wrote a book on cancer healing several years ago and has since revived it its title is” “Cancer Free”. Since that time he has sold 2000 books to people who have read his book and are cancer free today.

He has explored the cause of their breast cancer, prostrate cancer, lung cancer and more. He says if your doctor has discussed the cause of your cancer, he wants to know – Why not? Once the cause has been agreed upon, reversing the cancer becomes easier.

The 2000 people that are “cancer-free” include people with all types and stages of cancer, including many “terminal” cancer patients.

These people come from all over the world, in 71 countries. They came to Bill about his book as a last resort. It was after their cancer doctors had given up on them and assigned them a “survival time.” The message was, get your affairs in order you have two months to live.

It’s troubling to me that most doctors today seem to have little concern for their patient’s well being like they did in my generation.

The pressure they get from their own medical organization to treat illnesses and diseases with drugs seems to be the norm today.

Even the prescription drug industry visits to their offices offer them incentives to use their “poisons” to treat patients.

I have even read that some well-meaning doctors have banned drugs representatives from even coming to their office. I think that is the start of some good news.

However the drug industry is so large and powerful that they even have Congress convinced their products are the “miracle cure” for all illnesses and diseases.

Consequently no legislation ever gets through Congress by any organization that has proven cures because of Big Pharma’s influence.

At this time, the only solution to this problem is that people must “take charge” of their own health. They must seek out alternative methods to change their poor lifestyle habits. This is the only answer to a perfect wellness condition.

Prescription drugs are not a healthy alternative. They literally and eventually can be very detrimental to your whole body. It’s proven knowledge. I’ve done the research and I know it’s true.

Sonny grew up in a family that owned a local florist business that lasted for 63 years. For 29 years he was personally involved in the business.

Eventually becoming dissatisfied at the age of 44 years with it, he left to become a sales representative and spent more than 20 years in sales roles.

After retirement Sonny became heavily involved in developing an Internet business.

Four years ago, his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. On the first visit with his wife to her oncologist, Sonny became involved in a discussion over possible treatments. He wanted to discuss alternative treatments instead of conventional treatments for her disease. The doctor was not receptive to his ideas at all.

His wife did eventually accept the doctor's decision but Sonny never did endorse it.

Because of this experience he left the doctor's office that day vowing to spent the rest of this life searching for alternative health methods to treat and cure all types of illnesses and diseases.

He then began sharing that information on his websites and even started writing articles on health matters to raise public awareness on the issues.

His wife's cancer is now in remission and she does accept many of his healthy recommendations. Hopefully both of them will extend their life expectancy by following daily healthier practices.

Sonny will continue to share this valuable information that he has compiled over the years, plus any other information he finds in the future, with everyone who is interested in his findings.
